The Coconis Furniture Story - Celebrating 95 Years

The story of Coconis Furniture began when Nick Coconis immigrated from Tenedos, Greece in 1906 by stowing away on a merchant ship sailing to America.
He was discovered en route and was allowed to pay for his passage by working aboard the ship. Nick disembarked on Ellis Island where today his name is inscribed on the American Immigrant Wall of Honor.
In 1927 Nick founded the Zanesville Furniture Company at 710 Main Street, located in the same block where Tom’s Print Shop is today.
18 years later in 1945, Nick’s son, Paul, joined the family business after serving in the South Pacific during World War II.
Six years later in 1951, Paul opened a second store in downtown Zanesville, named Hallmark Furniture.
In 1953, Paul and his brother, Don,
partnered to build a new store in South Zanesville where it’s presently located.
Later in 1959 Paul closed the furniture store and tried his hand in the restaurant business. Less than two years later he was back in the furniture business. It was then he named the store, “Furniture Discount House”.
Paul had two sons, Junior and Randy, both of whom worked at Furniture Discount House after graduating from high school. Junior left the furniture business in 1978 to pursue a career in floor coverings.
In 1981, Paul retired due to an illness. Many can remember Paul's TV commercials touting "Get your Bonus from Coconis!"
It was then Randy assumed the day-to-day operations. In 1989 Randy changed the store's name to Coconis Furniture and after several expansions, the store had grown to over 70,000 sq. ft.

A 30,000 sq. ft. distribution center was built behind the store. In 2010 Coconis purchased the Maple & Adair location now called the La-Z-Boy Comfort Studio. In 2014 a second full-line furniture store was built in Heath, Ohio that has since expanded to over 40,000 sq. ft. today. A fourth satellite location was opened in 2018 in Lancaster, OH.
Today 4th generation family members Chad & Bo Coconis have taken over running the family business, and with Randy's 7 grandchildren, a 5th generation looks very promising.
